Good Evening, tonight we have Jake Vickers, frontman of The Zangwills in the studio for our third virtual interview. Hope you enjoy :)
Also they make such great music please show some love and give them a listen :)
1 Q: What is a Zangwill?
A: You know what mate I don't know but basically the name comes from, my sister used to live in London and there's a road where she used to live but I remember seeing and I wasn't even in a band this was like a year before and I took a photo of the road name and thought if I was ever in a band id call it that you know because when it looks good written down, But we didn't do any research before to see what it was we typed in Zangwills band wondering if there was one but we researched it since and there's an author, like loads of meanings to it but none of them are for us so we made them up ourselves.
2 Q: What made you want to start a band?
A: Me personally, I always wanted to start a band, my whole life but I think at that moment in time I was in another band and we never even played one gig but we just used to piss about in a practice room which was dead fun but we were just doing covers and stuff like that but I wanted to start song writing but I knew Sam from college and I didn't know him too well but I messaged him and said "Do you wanna start a band?" but I wanted to be in a band like The Wombats at the time and Sam said yeah he was already starting something with Ed so I joined them so I technically joined The Zangwills instead of starting it, Still now I see it as Sam and Ed's band it's weird.
3 Q: What kind of messages do you want to address to the audience in your lyrics?
A: In fact I've had some messages off people asking me what they mean and a lot of people think they mean different things to us I know that "chuck us a line" in Lipstick River doesn't mean a line of coke it just means a line like when you're drowning, a bit of rope or something but you know I like that, all these different meanings. And in Judas on the Dancefloor that's meant to represent a groper at a gig which is horrible but yeah if you didn't know already, that's what it means.
4 Q: As a band, who are your main influences?
A: I think they do change, very drastically I think I would get the influence off one person solidly for about a month and then move on to somebody else but mainly for me, people like The Cure, Robert Smith even people I don't really listen to anymore like The Smiths I used to listen to The Smiths a lot but don't really anymore but always impacted how I listen to music and how I write music and then you've got T. Rex even Green Day when I was a kid I loved Green Day even if I don't think it they probably do influence me in some way even now but yeah, So many I know Sam and the others have totally different ones and if you ask me next week I'll probably give you a different answer
5 Q: What is your proudest moment as a band?
A: Quite a lot to be fair because as a whole we never expected to get to this point even to this point we're not even a famous band yet and I remember there was a point where we'd think we never even thought we'd play Manchester. Like when we first started we thought I remember walking past the library which is the local venue in Chester but I remember saying to Sam and Ed when we were first practicing "We should play there one day" and we thought we'd do it in the next 2 years and then at some point after we'll play Manchester and we ended up doing that maybe 6 months in and then a month later playing in Manchester but I think the proudest for me was probably Deaf Institute like a proper show that sold out like it was in little venues and you know Deaf Institute is quite little and it had always been in like pub style venues like a Jimmy's sort of place where you have a couple of bevs after a gig not like a venue venue but I think that was pretty mad because we weren't really expecting it but then obviously Academy was mental but it's something we didn't expect, Cool though.
6 Q: Is there any memorable moments you can recall?
A: We were talking about this the other day because we did some podcast and we were talking about sometimes you come off at a gig and you don't remember any of it but I dunno why we have a few reasons maybe but not because your pissed or anything but it's a blur, If I think about the gig at Academy I don't remember any of it but like when I hear back recordings of it I'm like "Don't remember doing that?" but we obviously did and I think the most memorable bits are the waiting to go on with it being so scary and coming off and seeing everyone who'd been to the gig having a chat with everyone that's pretty good and then whatever we do after like go to a party or go somewhere in town its always dead good and you don't really need to get drunk because you're already high on adrenalin its so good.
7 Q: Have you got any plans lined up for the future?
A: I don't think its going to be the same anymore or ever I'm not sure really whether the new full for a venues gonna be different or because they were saying a full bus is never going to be a full bus again and I think it's the same with venues so maybe we'll end up playing a venue we never even thought we would, But in terms of plans we had a few gigs planned not even local in Derby, Sheffield but a lot of plans have been cancelled, hopefully they'll get rescheduled and we'll get to do them because we were meant to be in the studio as well because we do need to release some more music. But next big headliner, dunno don't think anyone does do they?
8 Q: if you were not a musician what would you be?
A: Gardener mate, probably be a gardener. I don't know I mean I paint a lot and visual art but I really like to do that before all this I was actually training to be a gardener but it got cancelled because of COVID-19 but I'm not sure probably wont get back into that I really don't know what id do to be fair never really thought about it. Or actually me and Ed just started up a microbrewery if I wasn't a musician id probably be a brewer.
9 Q: If you could describe The Zangwills in three words, what would they be?
A: Maybe just I Don't Know. Like I'd probably give you a different answer every time you ask me but I know that we've had to do stuff like that before like sum yourselves up in five words and put in publications but we always spend like days thinking about them. Adele (a viewer) said Mad Talented Bunch and that's lovely I'll take that.
10 Q: Is there any fun facts you want to tell me about The Zangwills?
A: This is another one where each time ill give you a different one, I wasn't meant to be the singer because I remember we were gonna find one and I thought i'd do it for the first gig and I really enjoyed it so carried on doing it and im just trying to think if we were gonna be called a different name but no we were always The Zangwills but that's about it we're quite a boring bunch really you know we've never done anything too crazy or maybe we have but it hasn't come to mind but I remember we started off in my shed in the bottom of my garden and it's pretty small to be fair but we kinda document everything anyway.
