Virtual Interview #5: Mint

Intro Question: Who are you? :)

A: Hi I’m Zak, I’m the singer from rock n roll band, Mint. We’re from Grimsby and like hugs and gin x

Q1 What made you want to start a band?

A: I think it was the elephant in the room for me. I just needed expression. I’ve tried loads of stuff but music seemed to just keep gripping me like nobody else. Whenever I watched gigs or whatever I was just in absolute awe. I knew I just had to give it a go!

Q2 What is the origin of the name Mint?

A: I think it was a drunk idea. It’s my favourite colour (mint green) but to be honest we all kinda hate it now hahaha. you always come up with better ideas further down the line, that’s the issue.

Q3 Is there any moments throughout the band that you are proud of?

A:We loved headlining the BBC stage at Humber Street Sesh. That was definitely a peak of the year. Maybe Radio 1 being a good subject? We’ve had a few shows on there from the indie show to the rock show, which kinda looks like we’re versatile? I don’t know I love it all to be honest.

Q4 What kind of icons do you associate MINT with?

A: Icons.. I guess The Hives is a big one for us. We openly rip them off beyond believe haha. I think we all like different stuff in the band but it seems like QOTSA and The Hives are the mid point between us all. And us? Probably the hair I guess

Q5 Obviously I assume you won't this year sadly due to the whole COVID situation but is there any plans you have for the the future?

A:We’re doing a drive in festival which should be fun? I’ve booked a flight to Benidorm while pissed as well so that’s kinda cool too haha. I guess band wise we are just destined to be bedroom rockstars until our agent starts booking stuff again!

Q6 What's the story behind your release Kill The Queen?

A: The Syria crisis. It really crushes me to talk about man it’s so sad. It’s kinda horrid that places like that get so ruined, I had a friend go there and you know that all Muslims celebrate Christmas? And all Christians celebrate Eid? And Jewish people too? Like they all just celebrate everyone’s shit together, it’s such a welcoming and multicultural society and there has been so so, so many deaths there of innocent civilians because of evil within politics. So I thought aptly naming our tunes “Kill The Queen” was my little bit of anarchy to represent a similar thing. Because funnily enough I don’t even hate the royals, but I know a few people who was offended by the name, which I found hilarious hahaha.

Q7 As a group, who are your favourite bands?

A:Probably.. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, The Birthday Party, Nine Inch Nails, Muse and Tame Impala

Q8 What's the best thing about being in a band?

A:Touring or festivals probably! Ya get to meet so many cool people and just experience the surrealities of being in a band with ya best mates. As a band we quite like recording too but I think nothing beats getting wankered in a field in the British rain haha

Q9 If you could describe MINT in three words what would they be?

A:Sick at drinking or Shit as fuck either works hahaha

Q10 What is the best gig you've played and the worst gig you've played?

A: Best gig was probably y-not 2018. Loads of Grimsby folk there just constantly crowdsurfing it was mental. The worst was probably one of our first in the No1 pub in Cleethorpes, I remember afterwards the audience telling me my mic wasn’t working the whole time hahaha.
